Iwuda is the solo project of First Nations bassist Davin Ojala. Named for the Anaiwan word for echidna, the project moves through jazz, groove, and a handful of other traditions to land somewhere bass-forward and distinctly its own.

Music for Iwuda was built in two halves. A suite of duo compositions, "Lullaby for Two Basses," "A Conversation in Three," and "Dear John," were recorded live in single takes at Yill Lull Studio in Canberra, during a week-long residency through Space to Create, a First Nations arts program supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists with the space and resources to do their work. The remaining sessions were recorded at Echidna Studios, where Ojala layered and reshaped every bass element himself, building outward from a single bass take and a drum part.

"The throughline of this album is the act of searching," Ojala says. "For a deeper cultural connection, for a way to represent my musical self, and hopefully the music invokes this sense for the listener."
